A Solar Hybrid system provides all the benefits of a standard Grid Connect system by replacing power from the grid with your own solar power but goes further by allowing excess solar power produced during the day to be stored for use at night. Being able to continue using your stored solar power after the sun goes down further reduces the amount of power purchased from the grid.
To store the solar power a bank of ‘solar’ batteries are added to the basic solar installation sized based on the amount of power (kilowatt hours) to be stored. Batteries are typically GEL type but with the ongoing developments in battery technology other variants including Lithium are becoming increasingly cost effective. A specialised Hybrid inverter/charge controller manages power moving between the solar panels, battery bank, home and grid.
Properties with an existing solar power system can be upgraded to include storage however consideration needs to be given to any impact an upgrade may have on Solar Feed-in rebates from Governments.
Another advantage of a Solar Hybrid system is the battery storage unit functions as an Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) meaning if grid power is lost for any reason the battery unit will maintain power to the house.
